Grandma Camp with KIA

I started “Grandma Camp” when my oldest grandchild was 5 years old.  I wanted that week to be a bonding experience, a time to get to know that person in a different setting and find something that we shared, something that would last in her memory long after I’m gone.  During our first few years, which included “grandma camp” tee shirts and drinking coffee (yes at five), we talked about life out on the patio in our pajamas and slippers.  As time moved on and this 5 year old grew to be 13, a week turned in to three days and then to one.

The other eight grandchildren began expressing their desire for a grandma or grandpa camp where they too have special time with us with yes, cups of coffee out by the pool, going to the batting cages or simply having a book read to them at bedtime. Just when I thought Jayden was getting too old for Grandma Camp and too busy with dance 24/7, she asked for a day this summer.  Her schedule and mine were ridiculous but we picked a day and I chose the events.

I picked her up in the 2017 KIA Sorento SXL that I had that week.  It came with a beautiful snow white pearl exterior and black interior leather seats.  She always likes to see what cars I have but today she took even more of an interest.  She said “Grandma, this is just my size”… interesting since she is taller than me and wears a size 9 shoe. “What do you mean?”, I asked. Well I’m trying to decide what kind of car I want to save up for and I’ve had my eye on the KIA Sorento.  My dad has a Cadenza, as you know, (laughs) and I like the size of this SUV.  Well you could have blown me away.  Have some of my talks over coffee and my book made an impression?  Has she read my book?  Well as we left her East Valley home, driving back to my neck of the woods, we talked about car buying and this KIA Sorento she liked so much.

Our first stop was for brunch at Luci’s which is a hip restaurant in Central Phoenix and has awesome omelets.  We then ventured to the Phoenix Art Museum where she never tires of the doll house displays. Next was going by her father’s high school where I shared the stories of his life at Brophy Prep, stories she has heard a million times. Our next stop was to Barnes and Noble where we grabbed a latte and spent time looking at books of interest to her.  I told her that she had $50.00 to spend and to choose wisely… the same way I guided her in the dollar stores when she was five.  She picked a cookbook, yes a good ole fashioned cookbook.  She promised me a red velvet cake for Thanksgiving.

As the day came to a close, with short stops here and there, I told her I had one more surprise… We pulled over to an empty corporate parking lot and I showed her the basics of driving.  She was thrilled, a little nervous but focused and very good. I would say she is a natural and in case of any emergency I feel she could help out behind the wheel.  (That was my intent.)

Grandma Camp has changed over the years but one thing remains the same, there are the “firsts” they experience with their grandparents that will stick with them their whole life.  It may be a first cup of coffee or that first time they sit behind the wheel of a car, but it’s special to them.  I think Jayden is convinced more than ever this is the car she wants even though she has at least five more years before she can own or afford one.  There is also a saying you’ve heard before with a twist… “what happens at grandmas, stays at grandmas”.
