2021 Dodge Durango Hellcat SRT AWD

The 2021 Dodge Durango has been referred to as “for muscle car people with families.” I agree with whomever came up with that.  I had to pinch myself several times when I was getting thumbs up from savvy teens to boomers with their own (1960 ish) muscle cars.   Like the Charger sport sedan and the Challenger muscle car, the Durango has an iconic square-shouldered design that makes a statement. I was thinking the whole week I tested it… I am cool. It backs up its aggressive looks with best-in-class towing, desirable acceleration, and ample room for up to seven passengers and your medium size dog.

For 2021, Dodge updated the Durango lineup with an even more aggressive exterior design, a revised interior, additional technology features, and I got to test it.  It’s the 2021 Dodge Durango, the high-performance SRT Hellcat. Packing a 6.2-liter V8 borrowed from the Charger and Challenger Hellcats, the Durango SRT Hellcat develops a rather extreme 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. Sounds appropriate for a muscle SUV, right? To learn more about the 2021 Durango check out my video and tiktok insertion.

The last time I received so much attention with my test vehicle was the All-Electric Mustang. Trust me, the Durango Hellcat made so much muscle flexing noise, you would never mistake it for an electric vehicle. I am glad the Durango has the V8 as my fellow journalists agree the exhaust tunes are deeper in sound and the V8 increases the Durango’s towing capacity compared to the V6.

The 2021 Dodge Durango is available in six trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat. Dodge offers a choice of a V6 or one of three V8 engines. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most models. All-wheel drive is optional on most and standard on both SRT variants. My test vehicle was AWD.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS…. The 2021 Durango supercharged V8 (710 hp, 645 lb.-ft). It has been called the fastest SUV in the nation.  The exhaust sound alone scared half my grandkids and the family dog to run inside.  However, once in the Durango with the kids, I felt like a soccer mom all over again. The Durango Hellcat combined the need for speed with the need to transport the kids to ballet classes.
