2021 Genesis G80 RWD Prestige

By: Cathy Droz – HER Certified

I remember the first time I was ever in a limousine.  It was 1969 and It was to go to the Senior Prom with my friend, who attended an all-boys Catholic school.  A limo was not the normal prom transportation like today’s youth; where even kindergarten graduates are transported to lavish parties chauffeured complete with unlimited Dutch Brother’s Lattes and trendy crumble cookies.

It was test driving the 2021 Genesis G80 RWD 2.5T Prestige that brought back those memories. I felt like the luxury and design of the G80 was reminiscent of the feeling I had some 50-odd years ago.

As soon as the fleet director delivered the car to my home, I knew this Genesis was something special.  Starting with its oversized ridge grill (reminded me of a Bentley) its muscular, tapered lines and 20-inch style-awesome wheels, the Genesis mid-size sedan is instantly recognizable.

My test vehicle was powered with a 2.5-liter turbocharged in-line four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The mixture delivers 204 horsepower and 32 miles per gallon fuel economy on the highway.

To confirm my feeling of my first limo ride, I discovered all the other extras you don’t find in all luxury sedans and price point. For example, acoustic glass is utilized for the windshield and all doors. Similarly, the G80 features improved door sealing, new engine compartment sound insulation and resonant sound-reducing wheels to ensure indoor quietness and class-leading, low levels of noise.

The G80 offers a high level of convenience to drivers with a collection of new technology. Each new feature is focused on seamlessly incorporating the G80 with its client’s/owner’s lifestyle, home, devices and likings.

Highlights include a remote smart parking assistant, 12.3-inch, 3D cluster, integrated controller, 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Genesis CarPay, valet mode, home connect, phone connectivity, and over-the-air, wireless updates to the navigation system. Other comfort and convenience features include a rearview camera, hands-free trunk dual front and single rear USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, and premium navigation.

I test drove the” Prestige Package” ($4,300) adds leather seating surfaces, heated rear seats and steering wheel, power door closure, wireless device charger, rear occupant alert, surround view monitor, blind spot monitor and parking collision avoidance. Mine also included the Advanced Package ($4,600) … the sunroof and 19” alloy wheels and much more.

Genesis is detailed on safety features, which is important to me with so many grandkids I transport.  Some of them include smart cruise control, highway driving assist, forward collision avoidance assist, and blind spot collision avoidance assist. Let me add to that with driver attention warning, lane following assist, safe exit assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance and a parking distance warning.

The difference between my limo ride of 1969 and this test drive of the G80 was that I was in the driver’s seat and able to enjoy the ride using all my senses. This Limo/Sedan is priced right and made to impress.
