We have discovered an interesting phenomenon on this trip-from Oklahoma eastward EVERY bridge we crossed actually has WATER under it-who knew? It’s an unusual sight for all of us Arizonans. We stopped for a couple of nights at the Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis. Tom & Huck would be right at home here. You have to go over a levee & through the woods to reach it on the banks of the Mississippi. While the homemade rafts are gone, the river barge traffic reminds us how important this river still is, centuries after it was ‘discovered’.
Memphis is a kick- we visited the Rock & Soul Museum near Beale St. A Smithsonian affiliate, it takes you on a musical journey from the sharecropper’s cotton fields to the “white boy singing black music” up to present day. Worth every penny! We wandered up & down most of Beale St, had pulled pork sandwiches at BB King’s (excellent), saw the lobby ducks march at the Peabody Hotel, and most importantly, listened to some live blues at WC Handy Park.
On previous trips here we have taken a 1 hour paddle wheeler cruise, spent about 3 hours at Elvis’Graceland, the highlight for me being the infamous “Jungle Room”, and took the monorail to Mud Island and its Mississippi River Museum. I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite among all that Memphis has to offer, but I’m sure we will be returning again, as we’ve yet to experience “The World Renowned Rendezvous Restaurant.” So many BBQ restaurants, and so little time…
